Richard Brock

Richard Brock, co-founder of Siskiyou BioSurvey, has over thirty years of consulting experience working in Oregon, Washington, and Northern California. His expertise includes managing and conducting botanical and fungi field surveys, project design, ecosystem inventory and assessment, plant ecology research, public lands planning, forest management, rangeland monitoring, and wildlife inventories. As a project manager, he guides field crews on large-scale surveys for federal agencies and private companies in a region known for its complex and diverse ecology, and is as an authority on the taxonomy and ecology of Southwest Oregon’s rare plant species. Mr. Brock also brings professional GIS skills to our team, to analyze data and create technical mapping deliverables to our clients. He received his field lichenologist certification with Northwest Lichenologists in 2009.

Richard Callagan

Richard Callagan, co-founder of Siskiyou BioSurvey, has more than forty years of consulting experience in Oregon, Washington, and Northern California. Prior to his work with Siskiyou BioSurvey, Mr. Callagan spent 20 years as a sole proprietor environmental consultant. His expertise in field botany has made him an authority on the taxonomy and ecology of Southwest Oregon’s rare plant species. In addition to his technical botanical knowledge, Mr. Callagan brings forest management and plant ecology experience to the team, as well as rangeland analysis and inventory, native seed collection, and wildlife inventories. As a company manager, he coordinates and supervises field crews, manages and tracks project data, and provides consistent communication with a range of clients.

Greg Carey

Greg Carey is a founding partner of Siskiyou BioSurvey and has over thirty years of experience working in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Colorado, Alaska, and Northern California. He is an experienced field botanist, mycologist and ecologist. As a project manager, Mr. Carey manages field survey crews and facilitates clear communication with our many clients. With expert tree climbing skills, he leads our team in forest canopy research projects, and cone collection contracts. Mr. Carey also brings professional horticulture and landscape restoration expertise to the team. He is an authority on native seed collection techniques and plant propagation. For thirty years as a sole proprietor and as a member of the Siskiyou BioSurvey team, he has provided native seed to federal and private land owners, as well as designing and implementing restoration projects for state departments of transportation, municipalities, and private landowners.

Jason Clark

Jason Clark has over twenty years of experience as a professional field botanist, plant ecologist, and wetland scientist in the Pacific Northwest and Northern California. His expertise includes vascular and non-vascular plant and fungi surveys, plant community mapping, ecological restoration design, and ecological monitoring. As a company manager, Mr. Clark provides leadership to project logistics, coordinates field crews, manages and processes data, and coordinates client communications. Mr. Clark also brings expertise in restoration design to our team. He coordinates with clients to guide successful restoration projects in wetland and upland habitats. Mr. Clark also brings GIS expertise to the SBS team; he provides geospatial data analysis and creates mapping deliverables on a variety of team projects. He received his field lichenologist certification with Northwest Lichenologists in 2009.

Nils Nelson

Nils Nelson has over ten years of experience as a professional botanist on public lands in the Pacific Northwest and Northern California. He has experience conducting and managing rare vascular and non-vascular plant and fungi surveys, plant community mapping, invasive weed inventories, and native seed collection. Mr. Nelson has taught mushroom identification for several non-profit organizations including Westwind Stewardship Group and Opal Creek Ancient Forest Center. He is an active member of the SVIMS Key Council group for mushroom taxonomy in the Pacific Northwest. He received his field lichenologist certification with Northwest Lichenologists in 2017. He has made important contributions to the fields of mycology, lichenology, bryology, and botany.

Jay D. Scelza

Jay Scelza joined Siskiyou BioSurvey, LLC inin 2017 and has 20 years of experience as a professional botanist, mycologist, plant ecologist and biologist in the Pacific Northwest. He has years of experience conducting and managing rare vascular and non-vascular plant and fungi surveys, plant community mapping, invasive weed inventories, and native seed collection for government and private landowners. Mr. Scelza brings field research experience and ecological monitoring expertise to our team. Prior to joining SBS, he managed crews on long term ecological monitoring transects in Denali National Park and Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve for the National Park Service in Alaska. He received his field lichenologist certification with Northwest Lichenologists in 2009. Mr. Scelza’s wildlife biology experience includes surveys for Northern Spotted Owl on private timber companies, and salmonid habitat stream surveys and spawning surveys with National Forest and Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Julianne Spelletich

Julianne Spelletich has over twenty years of experience as a professional botanist and plant ecologist in the Pacific Northwest. As a key manager she leads our teams in conducting rare vascular and non-vascular plant and fungi surveys, rangeland monitoring and analysis, forest and fuels assessment monitoring, mapping invasive weed infestations, and vegetation mapping for the Forest Service, BLM, and non-profit and private clients. Ms. Spelletich brings her expertise in commercial seed production to co-manage our native seed collection projects. As a project manager, she coordinates with agency personnel to determine seed harvest parameters, develops timelines and strategies for harvest, maps and monitors potential seed sources, assesses seed viability and ripeness, documents seed source information and seed quantity measurements, and is responsible for cleaning, storage, and extraction of seed.

John Villella

John Villella has over twenty years of experience as a field botanist, mycologist and plant ecologist in the Pacific Northwest, Alaska, and Northern California. Mr. Villella trains and leads survey crews, and manages projects in a variety of timber and rangeland environments. He conducts rare plant and fungi surveys, invasive weed inventories, plant community mapping and biological surveys. Mr. Villella has also worked in the academic field using his botanical expertise to instruct for several colleges and non-profit educational organizations. He brings his academic expertise to lead scientific research projects for our team in forest canopy ecology and cryptogam ecology and has extensively published peer-reviewed papers on these subjects. He received his field lichenologist certification with Northwest Lichenologists in 2004. He has served on the board of directors of the Northwest Scientific Association, Northwest Lichenologists, and the Understory Initiative and he served as the editor of the Bulletin of the California Lichen Society for six years.

Gretchen Vos

Gretchen Vos is a founding partner of Siskiyou BioSurvey and has over twenty-five years of experience as a field botanist and biologist in the Pacific Northwest and Northern California. As a project manager, Ms. Vos leads field crews, tracks project logistics, and coordinates with clients. Her experience includes rare plant and fungi surveys, noxious weed inventories, plant community mapping and wildlife surveys. She received her field lichenologist certification with Northwest Lichenologists in 2009. Ms. Vos also brings her skill as a technical writer to the team; she produces scientific reports, regulatory documentation, and land management plans. Prior to her work with SBS, Ms. Vos had extensive wildlife survey experience throughout the West Coast, and has worked with Northern Spotted Owls, Northern Goshawks, and federally listed large branchiopods and amphibians in vernal pool systems.
